Nassau County New York Officer killed in crash while conducting traffic stop





On Friday, February 4, 2011 at approximately 10:55p.m. Officer Michael Califano 44 years old, of the Nassau County New York Police Department, was conducting a traffic stop along the Long Island Expressway, when his patrol vehicle was struck from behind by a flatbed truck, as Officer Califano was sitting in his vehicle. The impact of the crash crushed the patrol vehicle between the flatbed truck and the box truck, which Officer Califano had pulled over.

Officer Califano was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by Rescue crews. Officer Califano was transported to the hospital, where he succummed to his injuries. Officer Califano is survived by his wife and three sons. The driver of the flatbed truck, John Kaley 25 years old of Connecticut has been charged with Criminally negligent homicide, third-degree assault and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle.
